Ian Betts

12 June 1949 – 3 July 2021

Ian Betts has been continually involved in golf volunteering at Club and County Level since 1982. The enthusiasm and drive to put something back into the game of golf, together with a desire to see others get the same level of enjoyment out of the game as he had was first class.  He was an excellent role model for others to follow.

Ian first became involved in volunteering at Edenbridge Golf & Country Club where he served on committee between 1982 – 1994, serving a Chairman of Handicaps, Social, Competitions and Junior Organiser during this period. He was appointed Club Captain in 1986. During his Captaincy he encouraged members to join the Kent Golf Union Individual Membership Scheme and, within 3 years, the club had in excess of 150 members in the scheme placing the club the 3rd highest membership in the county.

At the end of his Captaincy he continued to serve on the committee until 1994. He was elected President of the Past Captains in 1995 a position he held for 3 years till 1998.

Ian joined Langley Park GC in 1995 and was elected to the Club Committee in 1998 with responsibility for Junior Golf - a role he performed until 2005 (a period of 8 years). During that time, the junior section grew from 10 to in excess of 130 members under the age of 20. He introduced an awareness of junior participation within the club,  team clothing and blazers. Along with a sponsored Junior/Adult Competition he altered the way juniors were brought into the club, breaking down barriers and promoting fellowship between all club members. Ian also chaired the Langley Park Youth League (comprising 12 clubs) for 5 years. During this time, he introduced a club coaching program demonstrating the need to improve and emphasising the need to compete not just at club level but throughout the county. In 2005 the Langley Park Junior side won the County Championships and represented Kent at the National Finals were they finished 5th of 34 counties - a great achievement for their hard work.

Ian has assisted in creating the Kent Golf Partnership, which was formed in September 2006, becoming Vice Chairman. His organisational skills, enthusiasm and drive saw the Partnership grow in strength with the launch of its Golf Development Plan in February 2008.

Ian was appointed chairman of The Partnership's Academy Sub-Committee when launching its Academy Program in 2007 across five Regional Centres in Kent. Ian, as Chairman, was responsible for the appointment of the 10 Academy Coaches and for liaison with KGU and KCLGA with regards to candidates to move from academy to Regional/County Squads. Under Ian’s Chairmanship, the Academy grew to exceed 180 players.

Ian regularly assisted in the running of Kent County Championships and Events. He also has a joint responsibility for running the Kent Cubs Championships (now known as Kent Futures) for under 10 & under 13 boys and girls. Since 2004 these championships have grown in popularity with fields of 50 plus with ages ranging from 5 to 13 years.

Ian was appointed to the County Committee in 2004 with responsibility for Region 1 Coaching - a role he held for 7 years. During this time a number of his regional players have progressed into the county teams and England Squads.

Ian assumed responsibility for the County Under 13’s and Under 14’s as Team Manger in 2006. In 2011 he was involved in the set up and formation of the Under 14s League involving for South East Group Counties, which saw Kent finish runners up.

Ian has also played in the National Brother's  Foursomes Tournament for over 25 years.

May his dedication and enthusiasm be an example to us all.

He will be greatly missed.
