LOCAL MAN PAUL SMITH WINS OSCAR ASH CUP

at Park Wood Golf Club

On a warm September day, the picturesque Park Wood Golf Club hosted this year’s Kent Golf Union Oscar Ash Cups event which is a 36 holes tournament for men with handicaps of between 3 and 12.

A small but high quality field started in the morning sunshine as they set off into the stunning horizon on this course which was built in the 1990’s by local businessman Ray Goldsmith who still owns the Club today.  At lunch, 15 year old Barney Foreman led the field with an exceptional round of Gross 71, one under par and playing off a handicap of 5. Barney was followed by two Park Wood members Paul Smith who shot a gross 74 and Darren Miller a gross 75 both playing off handicaps of 3.

As with most tournaments, constancy is the key to success and unfortunately for Barney Foreman, this was not to be his day when a difficult afternoon for him provided a gross 86, causing him to disappear from the leader board but still finishing in a creditable fourth place. At least Barney will turn out in his next event playing off 4 handicap.  Paul Smith returned an afternoon 76 to total 150 and win by three shots from Hever Castle member Michael Hull who shot 77 and 76 for a second place total of 153. Darren Miller remained in third place on countback who followed his morning round with 78 also to total 153.

In the Nett trophy prizes, first and second places were reversed with Michael Hull taking first place with a net 141 from Paul Smith on 144.  John Cox of Bearsted Golf Club took third prize with a total Nett score of 147.

This has been another very successful season for Kent Golf Union open events with some of the knockout finals still to come.  The Board of Kent Golf Union wish to thank all clubs and their members who have hosted events this year and all golfers who have taken part in open, knockout and Members events.  It is only the generosity of golf clubs which provide their facilities that allows these competitions to take place. This is very much appreciated.
