Kent U18's play the first triangular of the year

MATCH REPORT

Kent U18s v Essex U18s v Middlesex U18s at West Essex Golf Club on Thursday 17th April 2014

This was the first of this year’s triangular matches for the Kent U18s and although not a good result for the lads playing in it, it was an opportunity for new lads to the squad to have a run out. The team consisted of four rookies to Kent golf at this level, Conor Byers, George Haley, Arthur Shipton and George Cockayne. This was mainly due to the Peter McEvoy Trophy being played at the same time.

Pairs for the morning foursomes had been decided prior to the day.  Although the point-scoring was not too prolific the Kent lads worked well together.  However, playing only nine holes some matches seemed to be over before they had started! Josh Woolley and Ollie Daws played really well and should have picked up maximum points but a lost ball on the last resulted in a tie with Essex and a win over Middlesex. Langley Park pairing of Fraser Mackie and Conor Byers also picked up 3 points and also played well together. The only other two points came from the pairing of Matt Sutton and James Austin–Rooth with their win over Middlesex. In third place at lunch some hard work had to be done to catch up with the leading county, Essex.

Early points for Kent from the initial singles matches meant that Kent was clawing back at the deficit. Unfortunately, that was short lived. Ollie Daws (Captain on the day) & George Haley, picked up two very good singles wins each and Matt Sutton picked up a win and a tie (3 points). Josh Woolley picked up a good win over Essex but lost to Middlesex in the later stages of his match. Conor Byers also picked up a good win over his Essex opponent and was pleased with his performance on the day. Other single points were gained by Fraser Mackie, over Middlesex & Adam Carnell, over Essex. Kent was unable to make any head way on their position at lunch and so remained in third place.

West Essex Golf Club was a good test of golf for the lads and we were all warmly welcomed by the members. The front nine was undulating in comparison to a relatively flat back nine and the course was in very good condition with well-defined fairways and greens running true. The three county captains all complimented the West Essex Golf Club and thanked all involved with the setting up of this annual event.

Grateful thanks go to Jim Pocknell, Mike Chaston and the ever present parents for their support and company on the day.
