Bobby Twiner (The London Club) wins Kent Junior Championship by 4 shots

On 28th July Royal Blackheath Golf Club hosted the annual Kent Golf Union’s Junior Championship for boys under the age of 18 played over 36 holes.  As we have come to expect, the RBH course was presented in immaculate condition with beautifully manicured greens that played with slick but even pace.

As seems to becoming the norm for Kent Championships, the weather played its part.  Following a spell of hot sunny days, the start of play was delayed by fifteen minutes due to fork lightening accompanied by torrential rain.  On a day when many parts of the South East suffered flash floods, it was fortunate that this was the only delay.

Fresh from his recent victory at Moor Park where he broke the Course record with a round of four under par to win the England Golf South East Group Junior Championship, George Mullins got proceedings under way for the morning round in which he had a hole-in-one finishing his first round with a one under par gross 69.  Playing partner Bobby Twiner of the London Club, also started well and took lunch having shot a gross 67 to lead the field at the half way stage, three under par.

The afternoon round followed the pattern of the morning with Twiner and Mullins shooting the same scores as the morning which secured a six under par victory for Twiner and second place for Mullins two under.

Those inseparable twins from Langley Park, Tom and Max Jordan finished in third and fourth position respectively with Tom one under par and Max two over.

Observing the standard of golf played, it is hard to believe these young men are still juniors!

The Nett Prize was one by James Norris of Knole Park following an incredible Nett 59 in the morning to finish the 36 holes Nett 11 under par.

It is good to see some promising youngsters taking part in in the premier junior event of the County and gaining valuable experience. Nett Prize winner James Norris of Knole Park, Kieran Stubbs of Chelsfield Lakes and James Robinson of Sundridge Park all with handicaps over 20, completed the field.  Eleven year old Kieran Stubbs was playing in his first County event and after morning nerves settled to a much better round in the afternoon.  I suspect these are names I will be reporting on more frequently in years to come.
