MATCH REPORT
English Senior Men’s County Finals at Hindhead Golf Club on 7th – 9th October 2014

Monday - Practice day

Well, not much of that! Rain all morning meant the course was closed until after 2p.m. Would we play then, as it turned out - NO. Rained all day until 5p.m. but we all walked the course to get a feel of how we could put our theory from the course planners into practice.

Tuesday - Nottinghamshire

What a difference, wall to wall blue sky.

Some excellent play and some “gutsy” finishing saw us sweep past Nottinghamshire 9 - 0. Fantastic, never believed that could happen, well done the boys!

Wednesday - Gloucestershire

Sunshine in the a.m. heavy showers in the p.m. was the forecast, as it happened, not a bad day. One heavy downpour in the morning saw us, again, take the foursomes 3 - 0 but not without cost. David Jessup after injuring himself in the morning foursomes, went to a sports clinic and returned with the news that he was “off games” for the duration - could be 6 weeks. Ross Galgut pulled a muscle in getting his clubs out of the car and struggled in the morning. A visit to the doctor afterwards confirmed he had in fact dislocated a rib and injured his arm. Both rested in the afternoon, the remaining 6 men standing ground out another fine win to take the singles 4 - 2. Green staff out squeegeeing the greens over the last 4 holes as the deluge returned. A 7 - 2 win overall, but this didn’t reflect the closeness of the match.

Thursday - Lancashire

Another day of sunshine and showers, heavy rain and thunderstorms predicted in the afternoon. The morning foursomes were always close, 1 up, 1 down and A/S after 9 holes. Ross and Philip lost some quick holes to lose 4 and 3. Richard and Chris won 2 and 1 after losing the 16th to a 7! (mind you it was chucking it down at this point). David and Bruce won 2 quick holes to go one up but then lost 2 quick holes and a fine par 4 at the long 18th saw Lancashire win the morning session 2 - 1. Not what we would have chosen, but set the afternoon up for a good exciting finish.

Two hours later and we hadn’t left the clubhouse. Thunder and lightning and flooded greens kept us off the course. Eventually at 3.00 the organisers took the decision to try to play off the 10th tee. Two tee shots were hit before the rain came again and play was officially abandoned. Singles session declared a half.

Lancashire win 5 - 4. Well done Lancashire, fine champions.

The trophy has headed north this year with Lancashire as champions but the real winner this week was the weather.

Many thanks to the England Golf team in the background, the referees, the officials and members, and particularly, the greens staff at Hindhead Golf Club for hosting us so well and for trying to get a conclusion on the course to this event.

Here’s to next year.
