Kent U 18’s v Sussex U 18’s 9th August 2010

This annual triangular event was yet again reduced to a two way battle between Kent & Sussex as Surrey were unable to field a team. Nonetheless this did not detract from being a good match between rival counties on a very good and sometimes demanding course (Eiger) at Woodlands Manor. Both sides were able to ‘blood' new players at this Under 18 level with many players being involved at various other events around the country (British Boys/Sundridge Park JO).

The morning Foursomes produced some interesting results with Sussex storming ahead with the first two pairings but Kent dug deep and local lad Paul Elvin & his partner Ben Gillon (debutants) won on the last. The experienced pairing of Jack Colegate & Lewis Kerr won well on the 15th and the pairings of Liam Sutton/Mark Collins and Jay Kelly/Jamie Guppy achieved halves. The halfway result was honours even (6 - 6).

It was all to play for in the afternoon singles but again Sussex produced the early wins, however, Kent had some good results coming from the middle order. Tom Lee & Adam Wells playing in their first U18's game, were both disappointed by their morning performances played some excellent golf in the afternoon to beat their opponents 1Up & 4/2 respectively. A special mention must be said for Paul Elvin, who was the only player to gain maximum points during the day. In the afternoon singles he really showed his knowledge of his home course with a convincing 7/6 win. Paul was asked to do the Captains speech in the absence of Jerome Titlow (BB's). He did this well and was presented with his county tie. The run of good wins however was not sustained and with the only win from Jay Kelly (3/1) out of the later Kent players. Kent lost to Sussex 22 - 14.

Thanks must go out to Colin Robins (Secretary) & the Woodlands Manor Golf Club staff for providing excellent facilities for this match, both on the course and in the club house. I would also like to thank the President, Chris Tappin, Past President, Ray Saunders & Alan Covey (Sussex Team Manager) for there company and support on the day.

Paul Cannons (Kent Boys Team Manager)
