One day, 72 holes, four rounds of golf - it's in the bag

Jubilant women golfers at Faversham Golf Club completed 72 holes of golf today (25th June) as part of the Macmillan Cancer Support longest day of golf. Raising in excess of £3400, the four women are the only all-female group to take part in this national challenge.

The ‘Fav Gals’, Zung Tang-Bennett (H/cap 12.7), Lucy Murphy (H/cap 15), Stephanie Figgis (H/cap 10.8) and Jane Beedle (H/cap 13.1) started at 4.30am this morning (Sunday) and played four rounds of golf at Faversham Golf Course, completing the challenge in just under 14 hours. Walking more than 20 miles, they completed each hole before moving on to the next.

It was not a race to finish or a competition, but they needed to keep going to make sure they completed the course four times. Playing off full handicaps, stableford two best scores from four to count, their score after 72 holes was 330 points, averaging 82 points per round.

The women took on the challenge to help the vital work Macmillan Support carries out. All keen golfers, none have ever taken on a challenge like this before.

Team captain Zung said: “Many of our friends and family have been affected by cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support has been there to help them with physical, financial and emotional support. We wanted to do something to say thank you to Macmillan for everything they have done for our loved ones.”

The team were supported by members of the ladies' section at Faversham who caddied and encouraged as well as keeping the players fed and watered during the day.

Stephanie Figgis said “At 4.30am it felt like we were playing ‘millionaires golf’ - not a soul around. Something I’ve not known before. We played consistently over all four rounds so we were all very happy about that.”

Playing in one of the hottest days this year was tough but they were determined to finish and complete the challenge. Jane Beedle said: “As the day became hotter the greens got faster making it difficult to stop the ball at times. And the fairways were running further so that helped.”

Lucy Murphy added: “It was such an experience. Everyone has been so supportive and generous with their time. We couldn’t have done it without them. And a big thank you to all those people who have sponsored us. It’s all for a very good cause.”

After 72 holes, 20 miles and 14 hours on the golf course, it would be no surprise if Zung, Lucy, Steph and Jane put their clubs away for a while. No chance of that, all four are taking part in a club competition on Tuesday - only 18 holes this time.

Kesson Physiotherapy in Faversham are so impressed with what the women are doing, have offered each woman a free massage for taking part. Denise Kesson said: “I am impressed by what they are doing and happily support them in this way. I think they’ll definitely need a massage after this challenge.”

Currently their fundraising total stands at £3400. Their fundraising page is still open. To support them please visit https://longestdaygolf.macmillan.org.uk/Team/favgals or search for them on the Longest Day Golf Challenge website.
