Kent Challenge Team v Chislehurst

Date published: 28 Jun 2023

On a hot, humid day, the strong wind blowing at Chislehurst Golf Club came as a relief, yet made play among the trees very testing.

The match overall was a very tight affair, played with 10-a-side singles. The home team started well, but after the first five matches were decided, the score was 3-2 in favour of the Challenge team. Chislehurst then went on a run of three convincing wins until once again the Challengers pulled it back to 5-4. All attention then focused on the last match on the course, in which Chislehurst led 1 up after 16.

The 17th hole, an uphill par 3 was particularly testing with the strong wind blowing across a steeply sloped green. After good tee shots, both players had a putt for Par, but Sam Pantlin for Kent lipped out and made bogey, whilst Mark Williams made his putt for the home side to clinch a 6-4 victory.

The course was in excellent condition, and the match was played in a highly competitive yet very friendly spirit.

Special mention must be made of the supporters from Chislehurst who helped to make the match exciting, led by Captain Paul Britt and Vice-Captain Simon Smollett, who were both in attendance. On behalf of Kent, we thank them for their keen involvement.
