Challenge League Team match v Sussex

Date published: 4 Jul 2023

A bright and breezy morning on the South Downs was the setting for the league match v Sussex. The Dyke golf club was the venue, a testing downland course with far-reaching views over Brighton and the south coast.

The match throughout the day was very tightly contested, but generally Sussex came out on top. The morning foursomes could have gone either way with two matches halved of the four. However Sussex won match four 1Up and match three was a convincing win for them, so at lunch the score was 3-1 in Sussex’s favour.

An excellent lunch was served, and throughout the day, Sussex were impeccable hosts under the management of County secretary Emma Whitlock. Our thanks to them. During the break, the wind was blowing up strongly, looking to make for a very tricky afternoon.

The afternoon followed much the same as the morning with Kent winning one and halving two of the matches. Three other matches were won by Sussex either 1 up or 2/1. The afternoon though produced a 6-2 win for Sussex, giving a disappointing result score of 9-3 to them.

The lesson for the Kent players who were of no worse standard than Sussex was twofold; To consider their shot making more carefully in view of conditions and as a result to increase matchplay pressure on their opponents, rather than putting it on themselves.
