Kent Men’s Seniors Championship report 2023

Date published: 4 Jul 2023

Mother Nature provided us with some very testing conditions at Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf Club for the Men’s Seniors Championship 2023. After day one, Steve Robson (Canterbury) and Richard Partridge (Wildernesse) were tied on 74, with Richard Punyer (Littlestone) on 75. Lurking menacingly just behind on 76 were Danny Curtis (Knole Park) and Mark Haffenden (Langley Park).

Day two was unseasonably cold and incredibly windy – you can’t beat England in July! With the players going out in reverse score order there was always the possibility of an exciting finish – and we weren’t disappointed. Mark Haffenden’s challenge for the title might have fallen away after an 82 but he did at least win the prize for the snazziest shoes. Danny Curtis posted another steady 76 but, sadly for him, his 152 total would prove to be just outside the prizes.

So, it left us with the three front-runners from day one, playing together in the last group, to decide matters. Somewhat amazingly, they all contrived to end up on the same total of 149, with Steve Robson and Richard Partridge shooting 75s and Richard Punyer going one better with a 74. Sudden-death play-off! A par apiece for both Richards saw them progress but Steve’s bogey meant he dropped out of proceedings and took third place. At the par five second, Richard Partridge found himself through the green in two, facing a tricky chip shot over a small, steep hill, while Richard Punyer was facing a 15-footer for birdie. With nerves of steel, Partridge chipped up to within a foot of the hole, his own birdie in the bag. Punyer gave it his best effort to prolong the play-off but, alas, his putt just slid past the hole and Richard Partridge became our Kent Seniors Champion for 2023.
