Futures Championships report

Date published: 4 Aug 2023

17 brave juniors turned up for the second Futures meeting of the season along with their parents and Kent volunteers not knowing what to expect. The weather forecast for yet another junior event wasn’t looking promising with heavy rain, wind, and thunder showing on every app! Everyone was keen though and fingers were crossed that 18 holes would be achievable.

Play did start off in the dry with some good golf being played by our young golfers, and then the rain made an appearance. Kent President Marilyn Brown decided that they all deserved a treat, so she visited the pro shop and came back armed with chocolate bars for them all to boost their energy and keep them going. We met the groups as they came off the 9th green for a quick photo shoot and Marilyn gave them their treat and happily they carried on in the rain, which was getting more persistent. The wind and rain were challenging for some of the golfers, but it certainly didn’t put others off, as there were some very impressive scores on the challenging 9 hole South Course. Everyone did look relieved though once they had played 18 holes as they quickly gathered in the dry clubhouse and yes you guessed it, while eating their meal, the sun made an appearance.

It was nice to see some new recruits to the Futures Championship along with some regulars. Within her speech, Marilyn congratulated everyone, which included the volunteers and parents for attending and staying out in the rain.

Category A - under 10 winner was Alex O’Brien (Weald of Kent) with 33 points

Category B – under 13 without a handicap winner was Zachary Ward (Poult Wood) with 49 points

Category C – under 13 with a handicap winner was Alice Chou (Rochester & Cobham Park) with 37 points, runner up on count back was Caleb Twyman (Prince’s) with 34 points and 3rd place was Alexander McKay (Knole Park) with 34 points

Category D – Over 13 with a handicap over 27.5 winner was Quinn Jameson (Dartford) with 39 points

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who supported their children for this event. Kent volunteers – Allan Stevens, Robin Cunningham, Cheryl Power and Marilyn Brown. Also Upchurch River Valley for looking after us so well.

Fingers crossed for better weather for the remaining Futures meetings this month.
