Men's Challenge League team match v Sussex

Date published: 16 Aug 2023

Kent were the hosts at Chislehurst GC for their first home Challenge League match of the season and the day dawned sunny but with a steady breeze. Manager Jon Mabbs and coach Benn Barham had made some changes to this week’s team and, during a pre-match discussion, focused on the need to get a strong start to the match by winning the morning Foursomes. The team responded really well to this, and at lunchtime, we were 3-1 ahead. It was only a slightly suspect ruling given to the match involving Lucas Dennison and Mustafa Hassan that prevented Kent from having a morning clean sweep.

After lunch, the eight singles matches went out, and Sussex, who featured a number of first team players, showed their quality. After 4 matches were resolved, Sussex led 2½ to 1½. At that stage, it looked briefly as if the morning’s work might be undone, but Kent had great strength in depth and the last four matches were resolved 3½ to ½ , producing an excellent 8-4 win for Kent.

Mention should be made of Sussex player Drew Bailey, who scored a hole-in-one on the 13th hole, also of the noticeable friendliness of the two teams and the spirit in which the match was played.

Our thanks go to Chislehurst GC for hosting the match so well and to Vice-Captain Simon Gander for his presence throughout the day, ensuring that all went smoothly.

The next Kent match will return to Chislehurst on 27th August, when they will host Hampshire.
