Men's Challenge League Team match v Hampshire

Date published: 28 Aug 2023

Hampshire brought a strong team to Chislehurst GC on Sunday, needing to win the match to finish first in the Southern Counties League. Kent were able to field virtually the side that had beaten Sussex two weeks previously, so the stage was set for a day of very good golf.

In the morning Foursomes, Hampshire declared their intent by beating the Wrotham Heath pairing of Joe Hooper and Dickie Moxham by 3&2. They followed this with a tight one up win over Lucas Dennison (Rochester & Cobham) and Mustafa Hassan (Langley Park). Kent were holding their own in the last two matches, but eventually Chislehurst member Nick Buckland and Kent OOM leader Charlie Hickling were beaten 3&1, leaving only the last pairing of Sam Pantlin (Pedham Place) and Lloyd Nutley (North Foreland) as the only morning winners.

After lunch in the splendid clubhouse, Kent set out to repair the damage in the Singles. However, our first two players were beaten convincingly by strong Hampshire players. Nick Buckland, and then Lucas Dennison had good wins and then in the toughest match of the day, Mustafa Hassan was eventually beaten by Hants first team player Rob Wheeler. In the remaining matches, the honours were evenly split, leaving Hampshire as deserving winners overall, and League Champions with a final score of 7½ to 4 ½.

Mention must be made of the courtesy and hospitality shown to both teams by Chislehurst GC, led on the day by Club Captain, Paul Britt. The course was in excellent condition and the facilities were much appreciated by all players.

The match, despite being very competitive, was played in great spirit by both teams, and was a fitting conclusion to the Challenge league season.
