Kent Veteran’s Club Championship Final report

Date published: 14 Sep 2023

After a grey start to the day, the threat of rain disappeared, and the sun accompanied the stiff breeze at Chestfield for this year’s final of the Kent Veteran’s Club Championship between Wrotham Heath and West Malling.

Match one saw Reg Grace and Mervyn Brooker (Wrotham Heath) taking on Andy Yates and Malcolm Gofton (West Malling). Andy and Malcolm had a 2-up lead at the turn and extended it to 3-up after 12. It was a lead they would not relinquish, and they ran out 5&4 winners to give West Malling the first point on the board.

The third match of Chris Longhurst and Glenn Fisher (Wrotham Heath) and Jim Cain and John Willoughby (West Malling) followed a similar pattern with Jim and John finding themselves 1-up after six and then 3-up after nine. Again, they would hold firm and shook hands on the 15th green, giving West Malling the second decisive point.

Not to be left out, John Porter and Phil Davies (West Malling), playing in the middle match, completed a clean sweep on the 17th green by beating Grahame Smith and Andy Hyde (Wrotham Heath) by the closer margin of 2&1.

Our thanks go to Chestfield for their warm welcome and for presenting the course in such fine condition, and also to referee, Ash Weller, for giving up his time to officiate.

Many congratulations to the West Malling team on their victory!
