Coombe Cup and Tappin Trophy Finals report

Tenterden Golf Club were our kind hosts for the finals of the 2023 Coombe Cup and Tappin Trophy
The Coombe Cup is a foursomes matchplay for women over the age of 68 and our finalists this year were Carole Collins-Biggs and Pat Donovan (Littlestone) against Liz Lodwig and Marion Sellar (Chislehurst), with Liz and Marion receiving 16 shots - shots they duly put to good use as they found themselves 2 up at the turn. Carole and Pat fought valiantly on the back nine but Liz and Marion held firm and won on the 16th green by a score of 3&2.
The Tappin Trophy is a 3-a-side singles matchplay with one player in each of the following handicap bands: 12.5 to 19.4, 19.5 to 27.4 and 27.5 to 36.4. Our finalists this year were Chestfield - represented by Yvonne Bridge, Patsy Haynes and Maggie Reeves, and Ashford – represented by Tracyann Wood, Sue Wanless and Carol McBain. In the first match, between Yvonne and Tracyann, Yvonne was receiving six shots and used them well to be 4-up at the turn. Tracyann reduced the deficit to 3-up with three to play but couldn’t prevent Yvonne claiming victory on the next hole by a score of 4&2 and giving the first point to Chestfield. Match two, between Patsy and Sue (Patsy receiving one shot), followed a similar pattern but this time it was the Ashford player who was ahead at the turn and would go on to win by 4&3. In the final game, Maggie was giving five shots and Carol took advantage to be 4-up after nine. Despite her best efforts, Maggie was unable to turn it around and Carol would go on to win on the fourteenth and give Ashford the decisive point.
The matches were played in a very friendly spirit and it was a pleasure to see the finalists so well supported by their caddies and spectators, all enjoying the early-Autumn sunshine.
