Amateur and Junior Foursomes, the Captain’s Cup, the Eric Green Trophy and the Top Club Cup Finals report

Date published: 24 Sep 2023

The sun was shining gloriously on all our worthy finalists at Sheerness for the finals of the Amateur and Junior Foursomes, the Captain’s Cup, the Eric Green Trophy and the Top Club Cup.

In the Kent Amateur Foursomes, where all 18 holes must be played and an aggregate of the scores used to decide the winner, Wrotham Heath, represented by Joe Hooper, George Burton, Jordan Hall and Richard Moxham, took on the North Foreland quartet of Tristan Jevons, Harry Spellman, Jason Morris and Lloyd Nutley. Match one was a close affair, being all square after 17, but Wrotham Heath took charge of match two being 5-up at the same stage, which meant that the deficit was too great for North Foreland to overcome.

The Junior Foursomes, following the same format as the men’s but played off handicap, was this year contested by Rochester and Cobham, represented by Finley White, Thomas McManus, Riley Dowle and Oliver McDonnell, and Canterbury, who fielded Brinley Foster, Georgina Carlotti (gamely stepping in as a late and unexpected replacement), Amos Brazier and Claudia Carlotti. Despite giving 14 shots in the first game and five in the second, Rochester and Cobham were not to be denied and played some fine golf to win 3-up and 5-up giving them an 8-up winning score.

In the Captain’s Cup – a mixed foursomes for two pairs over the full 18 holes – Dartford were taking on Bearsted. In the first game, Lisa Haddon and Peter Green (Dartford) were giving four shots to Sheila Marsden and Andy Brown (Bearsted). A close game; all square after five, all square after eight, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, all square after 18. Again, with an aggregate score needed, it fell to the second match of Jane and Martin King (Dartford) and Caroline and Ian Morgan (Bearsted) to decide matters. The Bearsted pair used their four shots wisely and would eventually run out as six-up winners.

The Eric Green Trophy is a matchplay knockout competition for any male member of a Kent club, playing off any handicap. Tim Lavender (Wrotham Heath) and Lee Brockwell (Shooters Hill) enjoyed a close and friendly game which went all the way to the home green. A long putt from Tim slipped painfully past the hole and a super up-and-down from Lee was just enough to give him the title.

Our final final was the Top Club fourball betterball competition where two pairs of men represent each club, again, playing all 18 holes for an aggregate score. In all rounds, except the final, one pair plays at home whilst the other travels to the away club, comparing scores at the end of their games to decide the winners. An unusual but fun format. The Prince’s team of Geoff Long, Nathan Lamb, Laurence Brown and Chris Galloway, took on the Kings Hill side of Andrew Drummond, Dave Ashton, Alan Lamborn and Steve Dozin. It could not have been tighter with both games still having the potential to go either way playing the last. Prince’s snuck the first match by 1-up and with the second game finishing all square, this was enough to give them the title by the smallest of margins.

Sheerness were gracious and enthusiastic hosts and we thank them most sincerely for their hospitality and for the kind words from President Paul at the presentation. Thanks must also go to referee, Mark, volunteers, Tom and Robin, and our new County President, Chris Reynolds, forhanding out the prizes. Finally, thank you to Chris and Elaine Tappin for coming along to support the Captain’s Cup – a competition they started in 2003 when they were both County Captain – and for presenting the trophy. We look forward to seeing faces, new and old, at the finals next year at North Foreland.
