Hinge Trophy Qualifier report

Date published: 8 Nov 2023

With the sad news coming on Saturday afternoon that Littlestone, where golf was only possible with the addition of flippers and scuba tanks, was closed for the weekend, it fell to the 50 competitors at Royal Cinque Ports to get our 2023/24 Hinge Trophy campaign under way.

Out early and setting a good pace, in all senses, was Charlie Hickling (Wildernesse), whose two-under-par 70 would sit proudly at the top of the leaderboard all day. Two players shot a level-par 72; Daniel Cooke (Canterbury), who took second place on countback, and Dan Knight (Mid Kent), who belied his 3 handicap with a very well-put-together round, which included a two-under par front nine.

Consequently, this gave Dan the best nett score of the day, four shots ahead of Jack Johnston (Sheerness) and Tommy Hulance (Dartford).

Prizes for this round will be presented after round 2 at Prince’s.

Our sincerest thanks go to Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and continuing support of Kent Golf.

Finally, a special mention to the referees and volunteers – Britta, Ken, Ali, Sam, Jon and Adrian – who, under Britta’s stewardship, did an exemplary job in getting all players round in daylight. It was close, but we did it!

We now look forward to Prince’s on the 14th January, from where the top 24 will progress to the final at Royal St. George’s.
