Chris makes astonishing start at Canterbury
Brand new member Chris Almond (pictured below) beat his age as he played the round of his life to score a fabulous seven birdie gross 65, net 62, and win Wednesday’s Men’s Midweek Medal.
Playing off three, he won by four shots from second placed Geoff Plommer in a field of 39.
Chris, aged 66, only joined Canterbury last week from Royal Mid-Surrey after moving to Aylesham to join his girlfriend Lucy and said: ''I’ve shot below my age for the very first time - 65 gross is not bad. Seven birdies, one bogey, it’s the best score of my life and I’ve been playing for nearly sixty years. I’m very pleased obviously.''
Chris scored birdies at the 1st, 4th, 6th and 9th and dropped his only shot at the 5th for an outward three under par 33.
Three further birdies at the 11th, 13th and 17th then completed his astonishing round, having played Canterbury only once before.
He said: ''At the end of August my girlfriend Lucy and I were scouting clubs around Kent. We went to a couple of courses, booked a round at Canterbury, met (General Manager) Roger Hyder and I played while Lucy walked it, and that was my first round here. It was very bouncy then but the greens were a lot more receptive on Wednesday and the fairways much softer after the rain. I love the course and especially the greens. My handicap’s gone down to 0.6 so I’ll be playing off 1 now but when the World Handicap System changed three years ago I went from 3 to +1 because I had another similar round. I was four under par gross in a Seniors’ Open at West Byfleet with eight birdies and four bogeys,
There were no real highlights on Wednesday, it was just steady golf really.''
