HENRY SAUNDERS (ELTHAM WARREN)

WINS HINGE TROPHY

I reported in December on the two qualifying rounds held at Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s Golf Clubs where the top twenty five from each event were then scheduled to play in the second round at Littlestone Golf Club on January 5th.  Unfortunately, the main topic of the year to date, the weather, got the better of things and the second round was cancelled.

Instead of all fifty qualifiers playing in the second round, all were put through to the final at Royal St. George’s on Saturday February 1st.  After yet another week of torrential rain, Royal St. George’s came up trumps by not only allowing the tournament extra tee times on a Saturday morning to accommodate the increased field, but they got the golf course into amazing condition with fast slick green.  Whilst there was still more casual water on the course than ever seen before by the members present, it was in fantastic condition given that most of the neighbouring courses were closed and our thanks go to the greens staff for their efforts.

However, all bunkers were out of play for the day but conditions were tough with cold high winds and squally showers.  This was reflected in the scores with many of the County’s top players failing to break Gross 80 for their rounds.

The first significant leader in the Clubhouse was Henry Saunders from Eltham Warren Golf Club who returned a gross 74 playing off scratch and he held his lead through the field beating Kings Hill’s Danny Jones, playing off +1 on count back over the last six holes.  Ollie Daws of Royal Cinque Ports was third carding a gross 76 also playing off +1.  George Burton of Wrotham Heath Golf Club won the nett prize with 78 playing off a handicap of two.

Thanks go to all the clubs who hosted rounds for this year’s Hinge Trophy but special thanks to Royal St. George’s for accommodating the final in the way they did, their hospitality and, as always, a great lunch.
