International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Date published: 3 Dec 2023

It is the International Day of People with Disabilities and we would like to highlight this year's achievements in making the game of golf inclusive and accessible to all.

We would like to thank Stonelees for allowing Kent Golf to host the inaugural Ford Cup event (Disability Golf Day) on 8 July and the Family Golf Day with BBQ on 16 September. Both events were well supported, and we look forward to more fun days in 2024!

Our thanks also goes to coach Gary Bason, who is an integral part of making these days a success, and continues to deliver Kent Golf Approved Junior Disability Academy to children with physical and learning disabilities at Stonelees.

We have run a series of golf sessions for a lovely group from the Fenner Frost Foundation at Tudor Park with coach Jack Ryan, the student feedback can be read here. Jack also raised money for a buggy for disabled child (full story).

Our heartfelt thank you goes to Variety Golf, who support our disability academies and events. Variety Golf comprises a group of charitably minded golfers who make it their business – and pleasure – to play competitive golf at some of the most beautiful golf courses in the UK, whilst raising funds to help less fortunate children who, through no fault of their own, are unable to enjoy a quality of life which the rest of us take for granted.

Thank you to the Golfway company for providing equipment and setting up games, and to all the volunteers for giving up their free time and helping at our events.

And last but not least, an ambassador to our Disability Academies Kipp Popert (Wildernesse) retains his number 1 position in gross rankings of The World Ranking for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD) after his three wins on the G4D Tour and a win at the U.S. Adaptive Open this year. Kipp has also received a Special Achievement Award at the Variety Club Disability Sports Awards, and played with Novak Djokovic and other celebrities in the All Stars Match at Ryder Cup, all in the space of one golfing season!

As you can see, there is plenty to celebrate on this #InternationalDayofPersonswithDisabilities. Would you like to get involved? Click here to find out more.
