Statham Trophy report

Date published: 14 Feb 2024

The Royal St. George's Golf Club, Sandwich, played host once again to the Kent Golf Statham Trophy, an invitational event for some of the county’s best juniors. Sorted into teams representing the North, South, and Central regions of the county, competition was sure to be fierce as each team tried their hardest to win the shield.

The best stableford score of the day for the boys was 36 points, which was achieved by two Kings Hill members, Josh Van Niekerk and Alexander Dunmall. Although Josh took the prize on countback, Alexander deserves an honourable mention. With a handicap index of 4.2, he had a level-par front nine, which included three birdies, and, despite dropping four shots in the last four holes, he still carded a very impressive gross 75. Alexander is 11 years old. A terrific prospect for the future – you heard it here first!

The best score for the girls, which was also the best score of the day, was the 37 points of Mia Bolton (The London Club), and with Mia, Josh and Alexander all playing for the Central team, it was no surprise to find that their side had taken the shield for the third year in succession. Congratulations to them and the other members of the winning team: Scott Antoun (Wildernesse), Abe Bignell (Kings Hill), Tom Paterson (Boughton), Sienna Thumwood (Pedham Place), Adam Woods and Jacob Pearce (both Wrotham Heath), Max Moseley and William Henderson (both Knole Park).

Thank you to The Royal St. George’s Golf Club for another thoroughly enjoyable day on the links, and for their much-valued support of our county juniors.
