Memoir about Mary Bradley-Cook

Date published: 12 Mar 2024

Thank you to Sandy Hallet from Prince's for sending this wonderful memoir about Mary Bradley-Cook, the founder of the well known Kent women's scratch inter-club knockout competition.

"Mary Bradley-Cook was a member of Chestfield when I was little and a very good friend of my mum’s. Quite a serious Scotswoman and a low single figure player, she had strong, often voiced views about the whole concept of handicaps. When I was learning to play she never gave me shots - “So when you beat me, you’ve really beaten me”. That might sound harsh, but you can guess how hard it made me try.

She and her husband Jack, an ex army (Major I think) were keen gardeners with a stunning rose garden a few doors from the golf club. Jack, without fail, always wore a yellow rosebud in his tweed sportsjacket lapel, which Mary had picked for him. She was also ex-army. A front line nurse. She never spoke of the war. One can imagine why.

So that’s Auntie Mary. A wonderful, dry, funny, golf loving Scot, who put up with me for hours on the course. She was as pleased as I was the day I finally did manage to beat her.

She’d be delighted to see us all out battling!"
