Robin Young Trophy report

Date published: 15 Mar 2024

And lo, it finally dawned – a day with no rain! The 30 competitors in this year’s Robin Young Trophy were full of enthusiasm and determined to take full advantage of the perfect golfing conditions at The Royal St. George's Golf Club, Sandwich.

With the ballot point falling this year at a handicap index of 3.2, competition was sure to be fierce amongst our talented group of senior men, and we didn’t have long to wait for something special to happen.

In the third group out, John Heywood (Sundridge Park) - who only came in as a reserve two days prior - belied his course handicap of 4 by shooting an excellent round of 70. Two over after ten holes, John had birdies on 12 and 15 to get himself back to level par, thus posting a score that would sit proudly atop the leaderboard for the rest of the day.

Runner-up in the scratch event was Philip Palmer (North Foreland) with a 72, just pipping Richard Partridge (Wildernesse) on countback.

Nett honours went to James Jones (Wrotham Heath), with the Prince’s pair of Jim Coventry and Paul Copley taking second and third places respectively.

Our thanks, as always, go to Royal St. George’s for their faultless hospitality, and to our referees on the day, Britta Nolle, Ken Hannah, and Ash Weller. We were also delighted to have Linda Young in attendance to present our winner with her husband’s trophy.

Many congratulations to John on his superb round – a very worthy Robin Young Champion for 2024.
