50 not out

This year marks the 50th year that the Kent Golf League matches have been played. The League was formed in September 1967 at a meeting at Gillingham Golf Club. Six clubs confirmed they would participate. These clubs were Bearsted, Belmont, Mid-Kent, Sittingbourne, Gillingham and Sheerness. The agreed format at this meeting was singles with the A Teams playing off scratch and the B Teams would have no player playing off less than 10 handicap. The format changed to Foursomes from 1968.

Much has happened in the intervening years but there has been one constant which deserves recognition. As previously mentioned, Sheerness Golf Club were one of the founding members of the League and although it is hard to imagine, one player has represented Sheerness A Team every year from 1968 through 2017, fifty years!

The man who has managed this remarkable achievement is Robert Whitington who is also a stalwart of KGU events - many congratulations.
