Women's Champion of Champions report

Date published: 15 May 2023

33 women entered the Champion of Champions representing their respective clubs on a bright, blustery morning at Royal Blackheath GC and very quickly jumpers were being removed as it turned into a lovely sunny day.

The event started with an impressive lunch served in the upper dining room which set the tone nicely for the day. The course was presented in excellent condition with fast greens but with punishing rough which was reflected in the scores. Our starter, President Marilyn Brown, welcomed everyone on the tee and our referees Ian Palmer, David Hannah and Ciarán Burns were kept busy ensuring everyone had support when needed.

Kent Golf Manager Anne Wheble was in the first group representing Dartford and came in with an impressive gross score of 78 and her playing partner Maria Babadi (Littlestone) had 81. This was followed by Emma Hiu Lam Kwan (Chart Hills) in the next group with a gross 82.

As it happened, no one could catch Anne but she had to endure a long wait checking the leader board periodically until she was able to proudly and emotionally receive the Champion of Champions Trophy for the first time. In her speech Anne thanked Royal Blackheath for hosting the event and giving up their course on a weekend. Also, a special thanks went to her dad for the putting lesson that undoubtedly saved her a few shots! Anne was also grateful that she was able to compete in the competition when ordinarily she would have been running it, but that is what makes Kent Golf so successful – our team of wonderful volunteers!

In the handicap competition Karen Taylor (Redlibbets), in the middle of the field, came in with a very respectable score of nett 73, but Judith Houghton (Sundridge Park), playing in the penultimate group, took the lead with an unmatchable 71. Third nett went to Emma Hiu Lam Kwan (Chart Hills) with a score of 73.

Coincidentally, on the same day, in the Watson Trophy for male club champions (held at Dartford each year) home player, Mason Essam, took the title with a gross 65 making it a double celebration for Dartford!
