Kent Golf Union hits the mark with national golf accreditation for safeguarding
Kent Golf Union has just achieved SafeGolf, demonstrating the county’s commitment to safeguarding children and young people, as well as adults at risk in the sport of golf.
Kent Golf Union was created to promote, administer and encourage the development of and participation in amateur golf in Kent. Kent Golf Union exists to provide assistance to all clubs throughout Kent in the management of the game and to act as the ruling authority on golf within the county. As part of this, they arrange championships, trophy events, matches and competitions across a whole range of ages and abilities. Kent Golf Union seeks to provide coaching and the development of players from junior to senior golfer’s with team’s representing the County from junior to elite amateur level.
Sarah McDonald, County Secretary, who led the county’s push to SafeGolf, said: “Kent is a very friendly, welcoming and forward-thinking county. This award helps us to spread that message and to tell people that children are safe and secure when taking part in our events, attending our player development and junior academy sessions and that we also understand about beginner golfers.”
The award was presented to the Kent Golf Union by Victoria Crosbie-Crowley, England Golf’s SouthEast and South Partnership Manager. “I’m delighted that the Kent Golf Union has achieved SafeGolf and that its efforts to grow the game can be nationally recognised.”
The SafeGolf is a partnership of UK golf bodies committed to promoting a safe and positive environment for all those participating, working and volunteering in the sport of golf.
The SafeGolf partnership consists of members from the golfing bodies across Great Britain & Ireland and has been established to help golf respond to the issue of child protection in sport. Its mission is to safeguard the welfare of children and young people, as well as adults at risk, in the sport of golf.
SafeGolf is firstly, a website – www.safegolf.org – through which anyone with a concern about the welfare of a player, or the behaviour or practice of a coach, volunteer, organiser, parent or a player, can contact the lead safeguarding officer at their national governing body.
Secondly, it is the safeguarding standard England Golf will promote to all their affiliated clubs to ensure all clubs provide a safe and positive experience to children and young people whilst playing golf. The PGA are also using the standards to apply to all their PGA professional Coaches.

Kent Seniors win the 2019 Inter-Counties League play off - Muswell Hill Golf Club - 16th October
Wednesday October 16th 2019, Muswell Hill Golf Club North London, the final of the league play off with the winner of the Northern Division - Essex. Muswell Hill being beautifully presented in autumn condition. Rain forecasted for Wednesday morning, it certainly rained when the team left the hotel at 08:15, but fortunately by tee off time of 10:00 the rain had cleared turning into a nice autumn day.
The Kent Seniors last won this final in 2008, we were last at the final in 2014 when the last putt on the last green of the last match went the way of BB & O. Could Kent go one better? Well, fortunately we did! A win 8 matches to 0 with 2 halved matches meaning a superb 9-1 victory, but this doesn't tell the story. Good wins by Bramall, Goodin and Davis but with seven of the matches going to the 17th green it was another nail biting victory. Well done to all for digging in and seeing the result out.
A huge thanks to all of the Kent Players, officials and supporters this season and a thanks to Essex Golf Union, with the play off being competed in great spirits and to Muswell Hill Golf Club for hosting the event. A magnificent win for Kent and, we hope, a sign of things to come, and a lovely way to top off a superb season for the County.
Kent Under 17’s Vs Hertfordshire Under 17’s – South Herts Golf Club – 13th October
Sunday 13th of October saw the Kent Under 17’s take on the Hertfordshire Under 17’s at the wonderfully presented South Herts Golf Club. Sadly it was a challenging morning for team Kent with the only point of the morning foursomes coming from Captain of the day Ollie Gaisford and Henry Warnock-Thompson, both of whom continued their run of form throughout the day gaining maximum points, the other notable performances being Miles Gray and Jack Shipton winning their afternoon singles matches, but sadly resulting in a 10-5 loss for team Kent in a toughly fought day of match play.
Congratulations to the Hertfordshire team for their performance and all of the officials for making it such a pleasant and enjoyable day for all. Many thanks also to South Herts Golf Club for hosting the match and presenting the course wonderfully for all of the players.

Kent Win the English Men's County Championship - Huddersfield Golf Club - 27-28th September
Kent became men’s County Champions for only the second time after a dramatic finals weekend at Huddersfield Golf Club.
A 4-3 victory over Northumberland in their final match on Saturday afternoon was enough to earn captain Danny Curtis and his team the trophy for the first time since 1978.
Bearsted’s Ben Quinney was mobbed by his jubilant team-mates after holing the putt which earned Kent their title-clinching victory after they had earlier beaten Nottinghamshire 4.5-2.5 on Saturday morning and tied 3.5-3.5 with Somerset on Friday.
It meant that Kent topped the leaderboard with five points from their three matches and afterwards a delighted Curtis said: “You couldn’t write it, winning the title with the final putt of the last match, but these boys deserve it.
“Benn Barham has been brilliant as coach and our team of volunteers have also played their part.
“We’ve waited a long time to get back to his position and I’m thrilled for everyone associated with our county.”
With Northumberland only needing a half against Kent to win the title the odds were in their favour but Kent got off to a “flier” with Tom Sherreard, Liam Burns and Joshua Bristow all winning their matches to put Kent 3-0 up. Sherreard, in particular, was on fire with five birdies in a row to close out his match 5&4 against Andrew Minnikin.
But Northumberland then hit back with three wins of their own to level the match score at 3-3, and so leave the outcome down to the final game where, with two holes to play, Quinney was one up. But he then lost three-putted the 17th to allow Sean Heads to level the match and set up a dramatic finale, with Quinney holing a 10-foot birdie putt to bring Kent victory.
After being swamped by his team-mates Quinney emerged from the scrum and said with a wide smile: “I knew it was important, but I didn’t know it was to win the championship.
“Even so, that’s the most pressure I’ve ever been under because you just want to win a point for the team and for Danny.”
The Kent team, which had an average age of 24, was: Tom Sherreard (Kings Hill), Ben Quinney (Bearsted), Josh Bristow (Canterbury), Liam Burns (Chislehurst), Jacob Kelso (Kings Hill), Mason Essam (Dartford), Jensen Hull (Hever Castle). Captain: Danny Curtis (Knole Park); Coach: Benn Barham.

Kent Seniors vs Hampshire Seniors – Liphook Golf Club – 5th September
Thursday 5th September, Liphook Golf Club, a late summer day with slight chill and a brisk wind. A great day for golf and on a beautifully presented course. Our thanks to Liphook Golf Club for their superb hospitality throughout the day.
Unfortunately the day got off to a tricky start with John Coupe (unbeaten for us this year) and Seniors Champion unwell and unable to play, such news broke at 08.30am with phone calls made over breakfast but to no avail meaning that team manager Mark Singfield elevated to player, but not just playing, taking John's spot at No. 2!
Well, despite losing match No. 2, the team played a magnificently, with 6 matches going to the last hole and Kent winning the hole on 4 occasions. Richard Partridge winning 5 and 4 was the only winner out in the country. An overall win for Kent 7-3 but that is in no way a reflection of this game which was as close as it could have been without giving the manager palpitations!
A day of golf played in the best of competitive spirit with both Kent and Hampshire capable of winning the league title.
Next up, the League play-off at Muswell Hill on 16th October.

Kent Seniors vs Dorset Seniors - Remedy Oak Golf Club - 2nd September
Remedy Oak Golf Club, 2nd September, a slightly chilly overcast day with a hint of rain, that never quite arrived. But what a venue, Remedy Oak is a gem!
A strong Kent Seniors team (perhaps the strongest we have fielded in many years) assembled to see if we could win our third match of the league season. After 6 holes this was looking "interesting", well up in the first 3 matches, the rest were much closer. Up in 5 and down in 5 after 9 holes!
But the strength of the team shone through over the closing holes. 3 matches got to the last hole. Good wins by Haffenden, Coupe and Davis at the top of the order got us well on the way. Partridge at number 6, and the "tail" wagged with wins by Farbrace, Bramall and Punyer. Overall a fantastic win 8-2.
A huge thanks to Remedy Oak for hosting the event and to our friends from Dorset. A match played in true Seniors spirit. Hard fought but friendly.
Next up in the Seniors hectic schedule is the match against Hampshire at Liphook on Thursday 5th September. The decider as Hampshire too have won 3 matches.
South East of England Links Championship – 29th– 31st August
The South East of England Links Championship at the superb Kent venues of Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club and 2020 Open Championship venue of Royal St. George’s Golf Club were well contested with Kent players and those from further afield for this superb World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

As the week progressed the Kent success didn’t waiver with Mason Essam finishing in tied 2nd place with a total score of 288 (+2) and Ben Quinney and defending champion Jamie Guppy both in the top 8.
Furthermore, a first in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup ever with a 5-way tie for 1st place! Three of the five players being Kent’s Jamie Guppy, Ben Quinney and Mason Essam, thus rounding off a fantastic event for team Kent, congratulations to all of the successful competitors.

England Golf Boys’ County Finals – 27th– 29th August
Tuesday 27th August marked the start of the England Golf Boys’ County finals at the beautiful Kent venue of North Foreland Golf Club near Broadstairs. The 1st day of play began in a match against Devon in the bright yet calm conditions in the morning foursomes the team got off to a good start with a 7 and 5 win from County Captain Jacob Kelso and George Young and a tremendous half from Jack Shipton and Ollie Gaisford after being 4 down at one point which left the team at a 1.5 – 1.5 tie after the morning foursomes, sadly narrowly missing out in the afternoon singles with an extremely closely fought 3.5 to Devon and 2.5 to Kent separating the teams by just a single point and all of the individual matches being extremely close.
Wednesday 28th August saw Kent take on Lancashire looking to better their performance and get points on the board. A superb start to the day with Team Kent taking a 2.5 – 0.5 lead after the morning foursomes with fantastic Golf from all of the players. The afternoon singles were packed with exciting Golf from the very start and some matches finishing in superb style such as Oliver Lewis-Perkins holing his bunker shot on the 17th Hole to take a 3 and 1 win in the afternoon singles! The team finished the afternoon singles 2 – 4 meaning a 4.5 – 4.5 draw against Lancashire and the first point on the board for team Kent.
Thursday 29th August saw Kent take on Northamptonshire in the final day of the Boys’ County Finals, and team Kent were looking to take the win to finish a potential 2nd overall for the week. A turbulent morning of weather for the final day of play with looming dark clouds and a major drop in temperature everyone feared for the worst weather possible, however it managed to hold off and returned to summer conditions by mid-morning. The foursomes against Northamptonshire saw a tough morning session in all matches with a close 2 – 1 loss in the foursomes looking to improve in the afternoon singles matches sadly Northamptonshire were extremely strong winning the first 5 matches and Kent losing the afternoon singles session 5 – 1, therefore an overall total of a 7-2 and sadly a fourth place finish for Kent overall.
A huge thanks to all of the fantastic volunteers from North Foreland Golf Club without which this event would not have been possible and all of the assistance from England Golf volunteers and referees.
Thanks also to the constant support of all of the Kent Golf officials and fantastic spirits of all of the players throughout the week and a special thanks to Manager Paul Cannons and the assistance of Duncan Kelso, Kent Golf Secretary Sarah McDonald and Kent Golf President Jim Pocknell throughout the week, and to the thorough assistance of Squad Coach Tim Milford all week.
