Kent U14 Boys v Hertfordshire and Essex match report

Date published: 31 Jul 2025

Our fantastic Kent U14 Boys team played their second match of the season against Hertfordshire and Essex.

Following our great result in the first match, where we beat both teams in the triangular format, we were keen to carry on the momentum.

The match was held at The Darenth GC, in glorious conditions, with all three teams fielding very strong sides.

The result was again in our favour against both sides, 7-1 against Essex and 5-3 against probably the strongest side Herts have had for a few years.

All the boys played very well, some great golf out there, and all matches were played in a tremendous spirit. It was special to see the Kent boys who had won walking back (or on the back of a buggy) out onto the final holes to cheer on their team-mates.

Many thanks to Peter Parks for setting them up so well again during the practice rounds, and many thanks also to the club and staff at The Darenth. They are very supportive of Kent Golf and have been for several years, we are very grateful. We would also like to thank the players, and parents who do all the driving and ball-spotting.

More match details:

Out first, Alex Dunmall was quickly in control against Essex, but found tougher opposition from his Herts opponent, who plays off one. Alex switched through the gears, however, over the final holes, winning 2&1.

Jenson Ringer went out 2nd, and was really up against it v Herts early on, with birdies being thrown at him on the first few holes by both opponents. Not to be rattled though, playing solid golf, he overcame his Essex opponent winning 3&1, although Herts’ Mr Steady was just that on the day.

Skipper Oscar Ford out third, fresh from a 7am start in the Bearsted Club Champs, never looked in trouble and won both matches 6&5 and 2&1.

Will Henderson, out 4th, had a good day, hitting the ball very nicely, and won one and lost one 4&3, but looked relaxed on the course again.

Charlie Martin returned to the side looking good, and hitting the ball a long way this year, winning both of his matches on the 17th hole.

Jenson Barber had ‘one of those days’, we all have them, but he’ll be back, I’m sure. A great player doesn’t become a bad player after one round.

Jack Ward from RCPGC hitting it really well again, took a bit of time to warm up but eventually his long hitting, especially long straight drives, overcame his opponents 4&3 and 2&1.

Bearsted’s Patrick Rothwell out in the anchor role played some of his best ever golf, including only 11 putts on the front nine gave him an unassailable leads, eventually winning 7&6 and 3&2. Well played Patrick, and then winning The Bearsted Junior Open today with a great gross 76, nett 67, he’s clearly in form.

Our two reserves, Harry Walters & George Bennett, both played great golf, George winning both matches, and Harry winning one of his, but his other opponent retired injured... and that was after Harry had been stung by a wasp.

Another great day for Kent Golf, a great show of camaraderie and friendship.
