The Ten Counties, as this championship is known for short, was played at Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf Club in Kent on Monday 22nd September. The format is a team of 4 playing strokeplay off scratch with the best 3 scores counting. The 10 competing counties are Berks, Bucks, Essex, Hants, Herts, Kent, Middx, Oxon, Surrey, and Sussex.
The Kent team was all available and has been strengthened by Anne Wheble coming into the senior ranks this year. Despite suffering muscular pain, Anne came in first with a score of 79, which proved to be a good score in the tricky conditions of a strong northerly wind and soft ground. The next group in included Kim Morris, who was one shot better with 78, and we were already feeling hopeful of a good result.
Our next 2 scores came in quickly and were Sue Trasler with 80 and Tita McCart with 84, despite also not feeling 100% fit. We therefore had a total of 78+79+80=237. We then had to sit and wait what seemed like ages to see what scores were coming in from other counties. A few counties had two good scores, and so the tension was maintained until their last players finished. We were finally confirmed as the winners by 4 shots - a great result for Kent - and our first success in this prestigious event since 2016.
Sussex were in 2nd place on 241, and Surrey were 3rd on 242. The best score of the day was from England international Julia Brook with a creditable 76 in the difficult conditions.
