Thank you to David Rutnam from Chislehurst GC for sending this fascinating story of Kent Golf Union touring and playing golf in Zambia in 1982:
"In 1982 the Kent Golf Union toured Zambia. This was to reciprocate the visit of the Zambia Golf Union to Kent in 1980.
The instigator of these tours was Nigel Pearson, the secretary of Chislehurst Golf Club. He had spent nearly 30 years working there before coming back to the UK and had been deeply involved in Zambian golf.
A team of ten players and five officials represented the county.
A number of matches against clubs throughout Zambia were played.
The highlight of these was the one played against the President Dr Kenneth Kauda's team on a course in the grounds of his State House in Lusaka. KK enjoyed it so much that he insisted we all played an extra nine holes after lunch. The photograph shows the two teams with the President.
There were three official matches against ZGU, which Kent won 2-1.
It was in all respects a truly memorable trip.
