Tappin Trophy / Coombe Cup / Vets Club Championship Finals 2025 report

Date published: 12 Sep 2025

Dartford Golf Club were our generous hosts for the 2025 finals of the Tappin Trophy, the Coombe Cup, and the Veterans Club Championship. The course was presented in excellent condition, but sadly, the weather decided not to get into the spirit of the thing, and the players received an unfortunate and thorough soaking. However, all of our intrepid competitors battled on, and we were treated to some very exciting matches.

Tappin Trophy
In the Tappin Trophy, where a team of three ladies play singles match play in three different handicap bands, Sidcup took on the team from North Foreland. In the top game, Sheila Cleary (North Foreland) gave three shots to her opponent, Christine Farley, but still managed to win her game by 3&2. Matters were soon levelled as Sidcup’s Julie Wilson beat Shirley Taylor on the 16th green to set up a nail-biting finish. Receiving one shot, North Foreland’s Barbara Loveday held her nerve to beat Natalie Minter by 4&3 to seal the victory for her team. Many congratulations!

Coombe Cup
In the Coombe Cup, a senior ladies foursomes knockout, Janice Miller and Steph Parry (Knole Park) were giving four shots to the pairing from Marriott Tudor Park, Leonie Allen and Angela Grant. After a nip-and-tuck affair, eighteen holes weren’t enough to separate them, so up the nineteenth they went. Despite the pressure, Leonie and Angela held firm and won the match at the first extra hole. Well done to all four players for a great match.

Vets Club Championship
In the men’s Vets Champion Club event, where three pairs represent each club and play fourball betterball, last year’s runners-up, Lullingstone Park, took on Hever Castle. First blood went to Adrian Barker and Tony Speed (Lullingstone) as they beat Paul Endicott and Chris Jeffery on the home green. Hever squared things up when Alan Turner and Malcolm Kelly beat Clive Stanton and Frank Witt by 3&2, so all was in the balance as the last game approached the short par 4 18th with Hever holding a 1-up lead. A cracking drive from Lullingstone’s Per Mortensen finished just shy of the green and gave him and his teammate, Tony Maslin, a great chance to take the match to extra holes. But the Hever pair, James Pye and Duncan Mackie, had other ideas, as a lovely approach shot from Duncan finished eight feet from the hole. Per’s eagle putt just slid by, which left Duncan with a putt for the glory, which he duly dispatched in the calmest fashion. A tough loss for Lullingstone, but many congratulations to Hever Castle on their victory, and we look forward to having them host us for the final in 2026.
