95 year old Langley Park member Ranjit Hansra enjoys playing three days a week

Date published: 5 Jul 2025

Ranjit Hansra took up golf shortly after retiring as a Postmaster at the age of 60, never having played before. A playing member at Langley Park Golf Club, he will turn 96 in September this year.

Ranjit was born in Punjab, India, in 1929 and moved to Kenya in 1955 before emigrating to England in 1968.

Learning to play at the local Beckenham Place Park public golf course with a close friend, Ranjit subsequently joined Farleigh Golf Club, where he was a regular in the veterans team, gaining a number of awards. In his early 80s, Ranjit elected to join Langley Park Golf Club, it being much closer to home and far less undulating - particularly beneficial to him after a knee replacement. Here again, Ranjit quickly became a popular figure, playing in team events. In all, he has twice scored under his age, playing off a handicap of 12 at his best. A trophy cabinet at home is something he proudly shows off to visiting friends and family. His son and grandsons, who are also members of Langley Park, look forward to playing a round with him annually.

These days, despite some health conditions, Ranjit plays three days a week with his playing partner, friend Alberto Pensa, who is nearly 85. As they have 180 years between them, they play 9 holes (and on a good day, 11). No buggies for them - they both walk the course! To date, neither has been called for slow play!

Ranjit lives in Beckenham with his wife Surinder, in the house they bought in 1969 - they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last October.
