ROYAL ST GEORGE’S AND PRINCE’S GOLF CLUBS TO HOST 2025 SIMPSON CUP

KENT, ENGLAND – The fabled Royal St George’s and Prince’s Golf Clubs will be in the spotlight from September 28th to October 1st, as they play host to the prestigious Simpson Cup – hot off the heels of the Ryder Cup in a bumper week of intercontinental team golf.

For Royal St George’s – which has hosted 15 Open Championships and 14 editions of The Amateur Championship – it will be the second time the Simpson Cup has graced its hallowed turf, having previously been the sole venue in 2015.

Inaugurated in 2012, the Simpson Cup pits 13 injured Service members and veterans from both Great Britain and the USA against one another in an annual, Ryder Cup-style tournament that raises funds and awareness for On Course Foundation - a charitable organisation which is registered in both countries.

Since its inauguration, the event has graced esteemed golf courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Congressional Country Club, Royal Lytham and St Annes, Oak Hill, St Andrews Links and, most recently, Shinnecock Hills in 2024.

All competitors involved are members of the Foundation, which helps injured, sick or wounded veterans rebuild their lives; both through being given the opportunity to play the game, and attaining training and employment in the golf industry.

SCHEDULE OF SIMPSON CUP EVENTS:

Sunday, September 28th - Official Opening Ceremony, followed by Fundraising Dinner (Royal St George’s GC)

Monday, September 29th - Player/Sponsor Tournament (Royal St George’s GC)

Tuesday, September 30th - Simpson Cup Tournament Day 1 - Four Ball matches (Prince’s GC)

Wednesday, October 1st - Simpson Cup Tournament Day 2 - Singles matches, followed by Cup presentation and Closing Ceremony (Royal St George’s GC)

The tournament is named after its founder, John Simpson, former Senior Vice-President of International Management Group. Simpson, who himself only has one fully-functioning leg as a result of suffering polio as a child, is also the Chairman and Founder of On Course Foundation, and has managed players such as Sir Nick Faldo, Vijay Singh and Bernhard Langer.

Additionally, he is born and bred in Kent, and is a member at Royal St George’s.

“I am truly humbled that the Simpson Cup will be taking place at such historic courses,” Simpson commented. “The competition, and the events leading up to it, encapsulate what the On Course Foundation is all about, and giving these incredible people the opportunity to shape their futures, both in terms of playing golf and building a sustainable career, is the least they deserve.”

He continued: “Each year we’ve seen the most moving and inspiring stories emerge at the Simpson Cup, and I look back with great pride on how far we’ve come. We’ve got excellent momentum as a charity at the moment, and this year’s showpiece will be yet another springboard to allow us to help more veterans. It will be a privilege to see these heroes putting on another terrific spectacle at courses I hold so close to my heart.”

The Simpson Cup is the marquee event for On Course Foundation, with a matchplay competition format. Remarkably, after successive tied matches in 2023 and at Shinnecock last year, the overall series is deadlocked at 6-6 – indicative of how fiercely contested this event is. The host nation are currently in possession of the trophy by virtue of their win across the pond at Baltusrol GC in 2022. But they will be facing a competitive and highly-motivated American outfit, who will be seeking a first victory on British soil in eight years.

The Simpson Cup commences on the evening of Sunday, September 28th with the Opening Ceremony and subsequent fundraising dinner. The following day sees the traditional player/sponsor competition taking place, before the tournament proper begins on the morning of Tuesday, September 30th with six four-ball matches (two against two, better ball). The competition then concludes on the Wednesday with 13 singles matches.

Proceedings will be rounded off later that day with the Cup being presented to the winning captain at the Closing Ceremony, bringing down the curtain on another special four days for all involved.

Simpson Cup

THE SIMPSON CUP:

The Simpson Cup is an annual tournament between teams of 13 injured Service members and veterans from the USA and their British counterparts. The Ryder Cup-style tournament showcases the unique position of golf as one of the few sports where players of all skills and abilities can play together on a level playing field, because of the official golf handicap system.

The tournament is named after its founder, John Simpson, the former Senior Vice President of International Management Group (IMG), who has only one fully-functioning leg as a result of suffering polio as a child. During his time at IMG, John managed elite sportsmen such as Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh and Lord Sebastian Coe.

Competitors involved in the Simpson Cup are all members of On Course Foundation. The Simpson Cup raises awareness and funds for OCF, a registered charity in the UK.

ROYAL ST GEORGE’S AND PRINCE’S GOLF CLUBS:

Royal St George's Golf Club located in Sandwich, Kent, England is one of the premier golf clubs in the United Kingdom, and is on the Open Championship rotation. It has hosted 14 Open Championships since 1894, when it became the first club outside Scotland to stage the event.

Past champions include Collin Morikawa, Darren Clarke, Ben Curtis, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle, Bill Rogers, Bobby Locke, Reg Whitcombe, Henry Cotton, Walter Hagen (on two different occasions), Harry Vardon (on two different occasions), Jack White and John Henry Taylor. It has also hosted The Amateur Championship on 14 occasions.

The club was founded in 1887 in a setting of wild duneland. Originally the Club was intended to serve the needs of London-based golfers who were only able to play their golf on often crowded and unkempt courses in the local area. The tough par-70 links course provides a test of golf for even the greatest of players, and the fact that only five Open winners have managed to be under par after 72 holes speaks volumes about the challenge it presents.

A more-than-worthy neighbour of the legendary Open venue, Prince’s is very much a stunning historic links in its own right. It may literally be overshadowed by Royal St George’s but Prince’s certainly doesn’t fall short in the pedigree department. Striking a rare balance between modern ambience and historic charm, Prince’s Golf Club offers 27 holes of outstanding championship links golf in an idyllic coastal setting.

Having undergone a significant redevelopment since 2017, the club held the prestigious 2023 Women's Amateur Championship and hosted the Final Qualifying for The Open Championship from 2018 to 2022. The club is now ever-present in all Top 100 Great Britain and Ireland rankings and is embarking on perhaps its most ambitious period in modern history since hosting the 1932 Open Championship, famously won by Gene Sarazen.
