A few months ago, Kent Golf were thrilled to be invited to run a Disability Clinic at Royal St. George's Golf Club as part of the club’s Junior Week celebrations. That day was Wednesday 20th August...
We were very fortunate to have with us for the session the World’s Number One Blind Golfer, Amanda Cuhna, who is an R&A Foundation Scholar and attends the University of Arizona on a golf scholarship and is registered blind.
Amanda is very keen to increase access to golf for people with disabilities, which is why this clinic was so appropriate.
Ten very excited youngsters attended the day, most of them have attended Kent sessions before, a few from one of our regular disability academies, and the rest from sessions we have run for VI youngsters and some from our Autism Awareness programmes.
The Club really rolled out the VIP red carpet for us, and laid on a fabulous lunch where we all got to know each other and met Amanda for the first time, before heading off to the practice area.
We had set up a variety of putting challenges, which the youngsters enjoyed, before stepping into the covered bay area with Amanda to start hitting irons.
Amanda demonstrated her incredible skill working with Jeff Dukes from The Club, an ex PGA Pro with a VI teaching background, and showed us just why she’s the best. She has good peripheral vision, but only 20/25 yards of forward vision, so Jeff was lining her up, telling her the distance and wind, and then BOOM!
We had with us a young lady who is visually impaired, whom our JDO Tim had worked with a couple of times, so Amanda worked with her one-to-one, which was lovely to see.
Following the range session, we were treated to a VIP tour of the magnificent clubhouse and were shown all the amazing rooms, trophy cabinets, and pictures of this most prestigious of golf clubs.
My special thanks must go to the youngsters for their enthusiasm, every member of staff from Royal St George's who couldn’t have made us feel more welcome, Justen Fiddler Head Pro, Jeff Dukes, Andrew Jessop, and of course, the incredible and inspirational Amanda Cuhna, we cannot wait to watch her progress on the Adaptive Golf Tour.
We are in talks about making this an annual event during the Club’s Junior Week, we have said that Kent Golf would be very honoured to do it all again.
