Millstede Trophy / Holland Trophy / Three Feathers Finals 2025 report

Date published: 16 Sep 2025

The early-Autumn weather was in a changeable mood at Canterbury Golf Club for the finals of the Millstede Trophy, the Holland Trophy, and the 3 Feathers.

In the girls’ Millstede knockout, Bella Watson (Langley Park) was giving 14 shots to Upchurch River Valley’s Daisy Beckett. After a very close game, played at a lovely brisk pace, Bella prevailed by the smallest of margins and took the match on the eighteenth green. It was hard luck on Daisy, who put up a terrific fight, but having reduced her handicap this year from 20 down to 12, there is great potential and excitement for what 2026 may bring. Congratulations to Bella, who has reduced her handicap to 0.7 and is still only 13 years of age. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

In the 3 Feathers Gold Division (plus to 15.4), Carol Turl (Nizels) took on Sue Mullinjer (Wildernesse), with Carol receiving one shot. It was a close game, but Carol edged in front and kept her lead, winning on the sixteenth green by a score of 3&2.

In the Silver Division (15.5 to 22.4), Sundridge Park’s Shirley Beglinger gave one shot to Mid Kent’s Sati Padda. Sati had clearly brought her A-game along, and try as Shirley might, she was unable to make much headway, and hands were shaken on the thirteenth green.

Lynn Orrin (North Foreland) and Kim Daniel (Shortlands) did battle in the Bronze final (22.5 to 36.4) and treated us to a real nail-biter. Again, there was only one shot in it, with Kim receiving, and it was a nip-and-tuck affair all the way until Lynn nosed in front to be two-up with three to play. But Kim wasn’t ready to throw in the towel and won both 16 and 17 to take it to the last. It was a tense end to a well-fought match, and Kim rode the wave of momentum to snatch victory on the home green.

In the Holland Trophy foursomes, for handicaps of plus to 14.4, Helen Johnson and Jacqui Briscoe (Shooters Hill) received eight shots from the Pedham Place pairing of Finella Unachukwu and Michelle Warden. Finella and Michelle made a strong start, winning the first three holes, but Helen and Jacqui soon got into their stride and made it to the turn one-up. They extended their lead on the tenth, but Finella and Michelle fought back to regain the lead after fifteen. Helen and Jacqui then won sixteen and seventeen to take a one-hole lead to the last. With both sides short of the par-five green in two, it would come down to a short game contest. Helen hit the shot of the day from 100 yards into six feet, and Jacqui had the luxury of cosying up the putt for a five to take the title. A great effort from all four players, and many congratulations to our new champions.

Our thanks go to Canterbury for hosting us so well and to our referee, Ken, for giving up his time to assist. A big thank you also to our Past Presidents, Marilyn Brown and Chris Lohan, for starting the players off and supporting one of the major days in the Kent Golf calendar.
