Kent Men's Senior Championships report

Date published: 24 Jun 2025

From the comfort of the clubhouse, Littlestone Links, bathed in summer sunlight, looked serene and inviting, the untold stories of the Men’s Senior Championship yet to be written. But a quick visit outside soon dispelled the notion that it might be a gentle, untroubled stroll along the fairways. The wind was up and full of determination!

Taking a two-shot lead on the first day with a splendid 72 was Martin Farbrace (Sene Valley), one of only nine players to break 80. Could he repeat the feat on day two and take the title? With slightly calmer conditions for the early starters on the second day, the scores improved, and Andrew Francis (Bearsted) posted a target of 150 after following up his first round 80 with an excellent best-of-the-competition 70. Danny Curtis (Knole Park) added a 74 to his opening 78 to secure third place on 152, but Martin did just enough with a second round 77 to pip Andrew by one shot and become our 2025 Men’s Senior County Champion. Many congratulations, Martin, on your well-deserved victory! Martin also won the Godden Salver for the best 36-hole gross score for players over the age of 60 and made it a hattrick of shiny silver cups by also claiming the Handicap trophy. A commanding performance. The Over 70s salver was won by Littlestone expert and current County President, Chris Reynolds.

In the 18-hole A and B Division handicap event, low scores were very hard to come by as the wind increased in ferocity as the afternoon wore on. In the A Division, for handicaps of 6.5 to 16.4, Sene Valley’s Glen Paget took the Darkins Trophy with a solid nett 72. Runner-up was David Tyl (Knole Park) on 74, just edging it on countback from third placed Martin Llewellyn (Wrotham Heath). The Over 70s scratch prize was won by Mark Ward (Rochester and Cobham). The spoils in Division B, for handicaps of 16.5 and upwards, went to Bearsted’s Ian Morgan with his clubmate, Nick Ware, coming second.

Our thanks go to Littlestone members Doug Smallman and Julie Ballard for acting as starters and to the club for making us so welcome and presenting us with a course truly fit for a major Kent Golf championship. Finally, a very big thank you to referees, Ian Palmer and Ken Hannah, and volunteers, Anna Cooper and Yvonne Drummond, for giving so generously of their time. It is much appreciated, as always. We look forward to seeing Martin defend his title next year at Wrotham Heath.
