Women’s senior inter-county league (Mulligan Larsen Trophy) match report

Date published: 25 Jun 2025

For our first league match of the season, we played Surrey, who always have a lot of low handicappers available to them. The J.H. Taylor course at Royal Mid-Surrey had suffered a lot of damage due to flooding after the Thames towpath had been breached during the winter. In fact, it had only just reopened at the weekend, and all the players therefore had to manage some challenging course conditions in places. Many of the visiting team had lower handicaps than their Kent opponents, so we knew it would require some good play for us to get the win we wanted to get us off to a good start to this year’s league.

The weather was sunny with a strong wind that increased during the afternoon, and the team needed to think carefully about course management. Kim, in our top match, got us off to a good start with a convincing win. The next 3 matches were much closer, with Tita securing a vital half point thanks to some good work over the last 2 holes and Sue hanging on to a slender lead through the demanding finishing stretch. When Adele came in with a victory at number 4, we had secured our win.

Debbie and Caroline gained valuable experience playing at county level against opponents with lower handicaps, an important step in us building a younger senior team for the longer term.

Our thanks go to Royal Mid-Surrey for looking after us well and providing a delicious meal.
