Men's Mid Age Championship report

Date published: 19 May 2023

It was wall-to-wall sunshine at Walmer & Kingsdown GC for this year’s 36-hole Mid Age Championship where a full field of 60 players enjoyed the friendly hospitality of ‘the club on the cliffs’. With handicaps between +5 and 7 it was a high-quality field and the benign conditions suggested that there could be some low scoring in the offing. We were not disappointed!

In the first group out, Liam Burns (Chislehurst) fired home eight birdies and only one bogey for a course record 65. If it hadn’t been for a par down the last he would’ve achieved the rare feat of not having a five on his card. Joe Hooper (Wrotham Heath) was the only other player to break 70 with a three-under-par 69, one shot ahead of Tom Sherreard (Kings Hill) and Robert Osmond (Rochester and Cobham). Lurking just behind on 71 was Lloyd Godwin (Mid-Kent).

With the wind picking up slightly for the afternoon round, would anyone be able to catch Liam? The short answer was no! Playing together, Liam and Tom shot 68 and 66 respectively to finish first and second (133 and 136), but a special mention to the third member of the group, Danny Jones (Wildernesse) who broke Liam’s new (and very brief) course record by shooting an eight-under-par 64. Nine birdies and one bogey; some round! There was one other score in the sixties in the afternoon and that belonged to Lloyd. His 67 was enough to give him third place (138).

In the nett competition, some steady play by Peter Russell (Kings Hill), saw the 5-handicapper take third place with 142, with Liam coming second (141) and Lloyd Godwin taking nett honours with 138. In his speech, Liam thanked the club for their grand efforts in putting the day on and praised the condition of the course, especially the greens.

It was a first visit to Walmer and Kingsdown for a lot of the field and they enjoyed the lovely views, the unique nature of the terrain and the challenge it provided. We hope it won’t be too long before Kent Golf can visit again!
