Match Report

Kent U18 Boys v Kent U18 Girls at Walmer & KIngsdown Golf Club on Sunday 30th June 2013

This was the first time, I believe, that the Kent Boys U18s had played the Kent Girls U18s and it was a pleasure to host the match at my home club of Walmer & Kingsdown. This is not the first time this year that Kent has played at W&K and again the teams were very warmly welcomed by Terry Crowther (President), Val Thompson (Lady Captain), David Nehra (Secretary) and Lynne Cureton (Stewardess).

It was decided to play the match on a 4BBB Match Play basis so that all players were fully involved in the match over the 18 holes. It would have been a long distance to travel, for some, to play foursomes perhaps? Having carefully done the sums relating to the handicaps, standard scratch and shots received, the match went ahead following the W&K Captain’s Day Charity Shotgun Competition at 1pm. The weather was kind at the time, with the sun shining but there was a feeling that this was changing as the wind started to blow!

The first match out involved the Kent Lady Captain, Jerri Sewell and Mollie Lawrence against the Boys’ Captain of the day, George Dale and James Austin-Rooth. It seemed that the girls held a slender lead throughout the match with the boys coming good towards the end.  All square at the end was a fair result and both sets of pairs enjoyed the encounter. Next up was Fiona McCann and Lilly Price who played well initially, but, as the wind got up and the coastal mist drew in, the pairing of Tom O’Reilly and Tom Crowland took charge. The third group out saw the girls take charge of this match. Nicola Smith & Sophie Bargeron played very well in the ever increasing difficult conditions. They were always up in the match against a steady pairing of David Arnold and Matt Sutton.  Nicole Stewart and Lacey Clarke, the fourth pairing, were up against Adam Carnell and Teddy Soraghan.  Adam and Teddy were playing well together for most of the game and from being 5 up, with 5 to play, the girls proved their worth and came back strong winning two holes on the trot and taking them to the 16th hole. The final match was between Bethan Fuller-Willett and Darcie Smith against the left-handed pairing of Josh Woolley and Liam Orchard. The girls worked hard at their game but the lads were too strong as the elements became more and more difficult.

Following the match and the evening meal the two Captains Jerri Sewell and George Dale gave the usual thanks to all involved in setting up the match, which was deemed a success.  It is hoped that for the next and subsequent years the fixture can be found on both the KGU & KLGU calendars.

My thanks go to Amanda Spooner and Sue Lawrence (KLGU), to Mike Chaston (KGU) and to all the parents for their support and company on the day.

Paul Cannons (Kent Boys Team Manager)
