Summer Mixed Greensomes report

Date published: 17 Jul 2023

18 pairs entered the Summer Mixed Greensomes at Faversham GC looking forward to a fun afternoon with their partners and friends.

Unfortunately, the day didn't start off to plan, as the strong winds on Saturday had taken the power lines down, so no electricity to make drinks or supply food. No access to the Pro's shop as the electric shutters couldn't be opened, no till or card payments, but General Manager Paul was on hand with bar staff, Beth and Jo, to ensure we were able to start the competition on time.

Everyone went out to play with a smile on their face, despite the unusual start as the course was open and the sun was shining.

Barry Sears - Kent volunteer and Faversham member - was the starter, ensuring everyone got away promptly and giving guidance to those who had not played the course before. His next task later in the day was to inform each group that the power had now been restored so a meal would be waiting for them upon their return to the club house.

Luckily the wind hadn't done any damage to the course and it was presented in excellent condition but many of the players came in saying it had played tough as the wind had got up again. Mind you, this didn't seem the case for our winning groups.

Ladies' Captain Ginny Wilson presented the prizes, some of which had been donated by our sponsors Shepherd Neame.

Scratch winners were William and Clair Phelps from Littlestone, who are now the holders of the Jerrom Bowl.

2nd place (scratch) went to Tim Peters and Julia Forrest from Sundridge Park who lost out on count back.

3rd place (scratch) went to Andy Walker and Alison Chapman from Prince's.

Nett winners were Hayley Hopper and Peter Foster from Gillingham who are now the holders of the Mackenzie Cup.

2nd place (nett) went to Farah and John Davidson from Sundridge Park.

3rd place (nett) went to Heather and Jim Bennett from Wrotham Heath.

Nearest to the pin on the 9th for the men was won by Tim Peters and Alison Chapman for the ladies on the 16th.

A special thank you must go to all the staff at Faversham who were operating under very difficult circumstances. There was a very big sigh of relief just after 1pm when the power was eventually restored especially from Chef Ellie and her team Amy and Olivia, and what an amazing meal they put on for the players. I don't think Ellie will forget her first function for Kent Golf at Faversham!

In the thank you speech from Clair she said that this was the very first Kent Competition they had entered and it just goes to show that you don't need coffee or a bacon roll to play well, just snacks from behind the bar! They are now very keen to enter future competitions as they enjoyed the day so much.
