Kent Senior Women's Amateur Championship report

North Foreland Golf Club, at the far north-east tip of the county, was our host for the 2023 Kent Women’s Senior Championship. With an impressive field of 42 players – many having travelled a substantial distance to compete – we were poised for two days of glorious golfing on a lovely course with fantastic sea-views. Despite a couple of showers, the weather, for the most part, was sunny and not too breezy. However, low scoring proved elusive on the par 74 layout – possibly due to the thick rough and testing greens.
The first-round pace was set by Sue Trasler (Knole Park) who belied her 7- handicap by posting a fine 77, which gave her an overnight four-shot lead from Tita McCart (Sundridge Park) and Sharon Port (Lamberhurst). Just two shots further back was Debbie Cox (Faversham) on 83. Also celebrating on day one was Lelia Roche Kelly (Sundridge Park) who had her first hole-in-one on the 11th.
Day two proved equally as demanding and by the turn Sue had only a one shot lead over Tita. A birdie at 13 from Sue saw her extend that advantage only to see it erased at 15 with a bogey to Tita’s birdie. Honours even with three holes to play. Tita nosed in front at 16 but there was drama on the long par 4 17th when her drive was lost to the rough. However, a battling up-and-down with her second ball kept the damage to a double bogey, and with Sue also dropping a shot, they again found themselves tied. With neither player finding the green on the tough, uphill finishing par 3, it would take a clash of the short games to decide the champion. Sue, alas, could not save her par and another fine up-and-down from Tita gave her the title.
North Foreland Golf Club were super hosts and Ladies’ Captain, Kathy, did a great job organising a team of ball-spotters, whom we thank most sincerely. We look forward to seeing Tita defend the trophy next year on the 17th and 18th of July at Faversham Golf Club.
