13 juniors took part in the Futures Jamboree at Lydd Golf Club on Friday 18th August, and sadly, the weather was against us yet again. Even though the rain was heavy and relentless, all the juniors were still out on the practice putting green at least 30 minutes before their tee time. Now that's what I call commitment and dedication!
Jude Mackenzie was our starter, and it was her first volunteering role for Kent Golf. Even though Jude is a seasoned golfer, I don't think she thought that on an August day she would be standing out on the 1st tee in the pouring rain for over 40 minutes.
The rough combined with the water hazards did make it a very challenging course, which also kept our referee Ian Palmer busy giving rulings and advice. Tom Paterson was our other volunteer and, over the years, has played in many junior events himself; he is now gaining confidence and experience helping out in competitions.
As always, our young up and coming golfers were happy to be out playing, as you can see from the photos taken on the 6th tee after the rain eventually stopped. Yet again, they produced some very good golf.
The prizes were awarded in groups by handicap.
Group A - playing handicaps 17 to 25
Alexander McKay, Knole Park - 43 points - winner
Tom Edmeads, Hever Castle - 34 points - runner up
Group B - playing handicaps 26 to 55
Dexter Stavri, Prince's - 38 points - winner
Tilly Greatley, Shooters Hill - 36 points - runner up
The course was presented in good condition with the staff at Lydd looking after us well. Judging by all the empty plates and smiling faces around the dinner table, everyone had a good day.
Thank you to the parents, who always support the junior events, regardless of the distance and weather. Thank you also to our Kent volunteers - Jude, Ian and Tom - at the last of the Futures for this season.
