Southern Counties Senior Foursomes final at Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club

Match Report

Southern Counties Senior Foursomes Final at Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club on Monday 30th September 2013

A cool, blustery and occasionally wet day signified that our glorious summer golfing weather was coming to an end. The course at Sandown & Shanklin Golf Club is quite short by modern standards, around 6,000 yards, and is quite hilly. It was presented in fine condition and was a good test of golf on the day.

The Club hosted the event in fine style and thanks to the Captain and his team for their hospitality over the two days.

The morning semi-final against Suffolk saw some close matches before Kent ran out winners with three wins and two halves. Surrey won in the morning against Gloucestershire and so we teed up against Surrey in the p.m. final.

After 9 holes things looked quite good, up in 3 matches (7 up in one!) and close in the others. Things can swing quickly in foursomes match play golf and the tide turned early on the back nine before we eventually lost by 4 matches to 1.

Congratulations to Surrey. Thanks to the Kent team, to Sam Smale and Ricky Moore who won both matches and particularly to Dave Jessup who, after having knee surgery this year, has tirelessly supported the team in an "on course" capacity.
