England Golf South East Group Seniors League final at West Hill Golf Club on 22nd October 2013
October 22nd, West Hill Golf Club for the league final play off against Hertfordshire. Very wet playing conditions underfoot led to worries about getting the fixture played if the forecasted rain came down. Fortunately it rained but not the predicted downpour. West Hill Golf Club is undoubtedly a gem, even in these damp conditions.
After nine holes the match position did not look too rosy for Kent. Up in a couple, all square in a couple and down in the rest. A spirited comeback with fine performances by Messrs. Hurst, Galgut, Brooker and Reynolds meant that with 3 matches on the course the match stood at Hertfordshire 4 - Kent 3. The last matches, when last seen, after 14 holes, were 1down, 2 down and all square.
As we marched on, Graham Meddings got a half point against the Hertfordshire captain. Dave Jessup came back to win by 1 hole. Thus the last match was all square standing on the last tee, a tough 430 yard par 4. Both tee shots on the fairway, Hertfordshire go into a bunker short right. Kent onto the green about 25 yards from the hole. Hertfordshire come out of the bunker too cleanly nearly out of bounds about 10 yards over the green. We putt up to 6 foot, and yes, Hertfordshire chip in and we miss. A loss, but what a great match.
Well done all players on both teams and thank you to the club at West Hill for their hospitality.
This was the last match of the season, a season that saw us crowned English County Seniors Champions, league winners and second in regional foursomes. A good year and a privilege for me, the team manager, to have had the opportunity of running the team.
