New Secretary appointed at Kent Golf Union

New Secretary at Kent Golf Union

Kent Golf Union say farewell to County Secretary John Young who retires at the end of February following a very successful three year term in office. During his tenure John has not only rationalised the electronic structure of the County Office thus reducing operating costs, he has been at the fore of developing an improved relationship between the County and clubs with a much improved structure of communication.  Whilst wishing John a long and happy retirement, it is not the last we will see of him as he will be seconded to the Board of the County to Chair the Championship Committee in place of Ray Saunders, who is about to become President of England Golf

John will be succeeded by Paul Loman who takes up the reins on 1 March 2014.

Paul comes to Kent Golf Union with a vast range of experience drawn from a lifetime in sport and teaching, most recently as Director of Sport at Ashford School. He has been involved at every level of sport, from grass roots coaching in schools to Premiership football, as team physio at Arsenal.

Born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, Paul was educated at Finchley Grammar School, and later at the University of London, where he studied for a B Ed in PE.

His love of sport was evident from a young age and he developed into a top amateur cricketer with numerous honors from his days in Middlesex and Hertfordshire.

It was Tony Jacklin’s memorable victory at the Open in 1969 which inspired Paul's interest in golf; he caddied at Potters Bar Golf Club from the age of 12.

Paul has actively contributed to the clubs where he has played, holding committee posts at Ashford and Littlestone, where he now plays off a single figure handicap.

His knowledge of elite sport means that Paul is well placed to support Kent’s top golfers in preparation and competition. However he is also mindful of developing a talent bank for the future to ensure the continued success of Kent Golf.

Paul maintains a holistic approach to life and sport and keeps abreast of the latest developments in training methods; his understanding of sports psychology and physiology is second to none.

Away from golf, Paul is an active member of MCC and a keen rambler.
