Hinge Trophy Final report

A perfectly crisp and sunny January day welcomed our Hinge Trophy finalists to The Royal St. George’s Golf Club, Sandwich. With the 24 players all within six shots of each other after the previous round at Prince’s, it was all to play for over the final round to decide the 36-hole aggregate winner. Would Chelsfield Lakes’ Jake Potter be able to hold on to his one-shot lead and take the title?
The early pace was set by Daniel Roberts (The London Club) who posted an excellent level-par 70 – which would turn out to be the round of the day – which gave him a 36-hole total of 146 (+4). This was later matched by Jacob Kelso (Kings Hill) who posted a 73. This meant that Jake needed to shoot no worse than a four-over 74 to take the title, but, in the last group out, things were not going according to plan. With a five-over par front nine, and another shot dropped on ten, it would take something special to turn his fortunes around; and it duly came in the form of a trio of birdies from the 12th which got Jake back to 3-over par. A bogey followed on 15 and the threat of a play-off loomed, but Jake held his nerve magnificently well to par the last three holes and win the trophy by the slimmest of margins. Many congratulations, Jake, a fine performance!
