Little By Little, A Little Becomes A Lot

Date published: 21 Apr 2024

"Even the smallest steps taken each day towards self-care and stress reduction can yield significant improvements in mental health over time."

With stress being a big factor in all our lives, what are the key ways we can reduce the impact stress has on our mental health and wellbeing?

In order to better manage stress, you should utilise the “5 A’s”, which include:

1. Avoid: Where possible, avoid stressful trigger situations, such as postponing dealing with a work task, meaning the deadline draws closer, and you become highly stressed because you avoided completing the task in the first instance.

2. Alter: Have a well-balanced schedule, trying to fit everything in, such as all meetings in one day, back to back, at various locations, will inevitably cause a peak in your stress level. Plan and prioritise your time.

3. Adapt: Accept that things happen out of our control from time to time. Take a deep breath, keep calm, and deal with changes as they occur.

4. Accept: You must be ready to accept mindfully that you may experience stress from any source or situation. Instead of opposing or becoming affected by an unchangeable situation, accept it and take steps to overcome it. Know your power, look for opportunities, and learn to forgive.

5. Active: Studies show that being active and taking part in activities you enjoy are key to boosting your mood, mental health, physical health, and overall wellbeing. Stay connected to those who you know are calming to you and listen well.
