Another season of valiantly fought Kent Golf knockouts is drawing to a close and six of the Women's and Girls' trophies were settled at Ashford this past weekend.
The Holland Trophy, a foursomes competition for handicaps plus to 14.4, was an all-Sundridge Park affair. Tita McCart and Janet Ball played a solid and steady game to overcome their clubmates, Bassey Dunbar and Anne-Marie Forrester, by a score of 6&5, as they lifted the trophy for an impressive sixth time.
In the junior girls' Millstede Trophy final, defending champion, Magdalena Hunter (Knole Park), couldn't quite make it two-in-a-row as Chelsfield Lakes' Selina Bartarya held her nerve to win on the home green by a score of two holes. Selina has only been playing golf for a little over a year and has already got her handicap down to 10 - what a terrific prospect. Both girls deserve credit for the friendly spirit in which the game was played, and at a refreshingly fast pace, too!
The Lohan Trophy, which has now been running for 37 years, was the brainchild of former Junior Development Officer and immediate Past-President, Chris Lohan, and is a senior/junior foursomes competition designed to give our up-and-coming girls some important match play experience. The Canterbury pairing of Scarlett Newing and Val Binns were quickly up against it and found themselves 5 down with 6 to play against Mia McManus and Sue Siddle (Rochester & Cobham). They managed to claw back a couple of holes but went down on the fifteenth green by a score of 4&3. Congratulations to Mia and Sue and an extra well done to Mia for making such a lovely speech.
In the 3 Feathers Gold Division (handicaps plus to 15.4), Viv Graham (Knole Park) was receiving one shot from Canterbury's Clare Mills. Viv won the first two holes to race into an early lead and extended it to 3up courtesy of a tidy up-and-down on the third. After ten holes Viv had moved even further ahead and despite Clare's best efforts to stage a comeback, Viv closed the match out on the fifteenth green, 5&3.
In the Silver Division (handicaps 15.5 to 22.4), Sandra Bowen (Wrotham Heath) was giving two shots to Royal Blackheath's Helen Crust and the players traded early holes to be all square after three. Helen then won the fourth, and after laying a long putt dead from off the green at the fifth, moved into a two-up lead. It was nip-and-tuck all the way but Helen maintained her two-hole advantage through 14 and the handshake came on the sixteenth green with Helen winning by a score of 4&2.
Our final final to be decided was the 3 Feathers Bronze (handicaps 22.5 to 36.4) between Shortlands' Ursula Edmeades and Canterbury's Alison Mason, with Ursula receiving two shots. There was nothing to choose between them as they made the turn all square, but Ursula then moved up a gear and won the next three holes to move into a lead that she would not relinquish. She closed the match out on the sixteenth, 4&2.
Thank you to our President, Marilyn Brown, for running the day, and to Chris Lohan for attending and presenting the prizes. Our thanks, as always, go to our referees, Jon and Ken, for so generously giving their time. Lastly, a mention to the caddies and spectators who played their part in making it a special day for the finalists, and to Ashford (Kent) Golf Club for their warm hospitality and for presenting us with a golf course in beautiful condition for one of the most important days in the Kent Golf calendar.
