ABCD Autumn Meeting report

Date published: 27 Sep 2024

Autumn arrived with a vengeance at West Kent Golf Club for the Kent Golf Women’s ABCD Autumn Meeting with intermittent showers and a blustery wind that was strong enough to blow over the players’ trollies. But it didn’t deter our 53 competitors from completing their rounds and enjoying the beautiful layout of the course that dwells in the shadow of Biggin Hill airport.

In the A Division medal competition, Dartford’s Anne Wheble defended her scratch title courtesy of a two-under par round of 73, with Finella Unachukwu (Pedham Place) taking the runner-up spot. Nett honours went to Gill McMillan (Sene Valley) with a fine 71, three shots ahead of Redlibbets’ Karen Taylor.

There were 34 players across the B, C, and D Divisions’ stableford, and it was particularly nice to see numbers growing in the D Division (handicaps 36.5 to 54) with some ladies enjoying their first Kent Golf competition. Best score of the day belonged to the B Division winner, Sandy Gristwood (Redlibbets), who had a splendid 42 points. Coming in second was home player Claire Moore on 36 points, beating High Elms’ Liz Whelan on countback.

C Division was won by Fiona Murray (High Elms) on 38 points, just two ahead of Sharon Kent (Dartford). There was another score of 38 points in D Division from Melanie Collins (Shortlands), which gave her the trophy ahead of clubmate Angela Everett.

Our thanks go to West Kent for their excellent hospitality and the most welcome post-match warming meal, and to County volunteer Helen Johnson for running the day so efficiently.
