Langley Park were our hosts for the 2024 Bradley Cook Trophy and Plate finals and the four teams doing battle – Sundridge Park, Royal Cinque Ports, Prince’s and Canterbury - endured an unusually chilly day for their hotly-contested scratch matches.
In the consolation Plate competition, the Sundridge Park team of Kim Morris, Ingrid Long, Anne-Marie Forrester, Lucy Speed, and Janet Ball, took on the Royal Cinque Ports quintet of Felicity Christine, Judy Houlden, Belinda Corbin, Ellie Evans, and Juliette Dunlop. In match one, Kim played her usual steady game to overcome Christine on the sixteenth and give Sundridge the early lead, but the score was levelled by Judy in match two as she held her nerve to edge out Ingrid on the home green. Match three also went Royal Cinque Ports’ way courtesy of a 2&1 win by Belinda over Anne-Marie, and matters were concluded by Ellie as she beat Lucy by a score of 3&1. Janet won the final match for Sundridge against Juliette which resulted in a final score of 3-2 to Royal Cinque Ports.
In the Bradley Cook Trophy, Prince's fielded an experienced team headed by the current County Champion: Ally Kutz, Sandy Hallet, Pam McGuirk Martin, Margaret Hambling, and Ali McGuirk. Looking equally as strong on paper were the Canterbury five of Ali Ord, Jen Rutherford, Angela Jones, Ali Kingston, and Caroline Collins. The top match was well-poised after seven holes, being all square, but then Ally Kutz produced more of the fine form she has shown all season to move ahead and overcome Ali Ord by 4&3 to give Prince’s the first point. It would require an extra hole in match two to decide the winner between Sandy and Jen – formidable opponents both – with Jen just prevailing and levelling the overall match score. But Prince’s turned the screw in matches three and four with sisters, Pam and Margaret, overcoming their opponents, Angela and Ali, by 3&2 and 4&3 respectively. This put the match beyond Canterbury’s grasp and all that remained was for Ali McGuirk to tie up her match against Caroline on the seventeenth green to give Prince’s a 4-1 victory.
Congratulations to all four clubs for making it through to Finals Day and for playing their games in such a good spirit of friendship. It was especially nice to have so many caddies and supporters in attendance, which made for a super atmosphere for our players.
Well done to Prince’s on their victory and we wish them well when they go on to represent Kent in the England Golf Champion Club event next season.
Our thanks go to the Langley Park team for looking after us so well, to County President, Marilyn Brown, for acting as a starter, and to our referees, Cheryl and Helen, for giving up their time to assist.
We look forward to another great competition in 2025!
