Race to St George's Final report

Date published: 1 Nov 2024

After a year of accruing points in our Race to St. George's qualifying events, twenty lucky finalists assembled at the famous links to decide who would become Junior Order of Merit Champion for 2024. We were treated to unseasonably mild and still conditions, which made for some impressive scoring.

Best of the day was a gross one-under par 69, which was scored by brothers Justin and Patrick Chenu (Chelsfield Lakes) and Pedham Place's Henry Vaughan. Justin emerged victorious on countback with Henry taking the runner-up spot while Patrick claimed the best nett with a 64. Tommy Hulance (Dartford) took third scratch with a 72. Second and third nett went to Charlie Gunning (Prince's) and Tom McManus (Rochester and Cobham), respectively.

There were no changes in the top three of the Order of Merit after this final event so Arthur Saunders (Littlestone) secured third place with 66 points just behind runner-up, Luke Hopson (North Foreland), on 68. But nobody could match the season-long consistency of Justin Chenu as he finished off in style by claiming the Order of Merit title with a commanding 93 points. Many congratulations to Justin on a super year of golf, and he still has one more thing to look forward to - the Grand Final of the Justin Rose Telegraph Championship at Quinta Da Lago in December. We wish him well and have every confidence he can add one more piece of silverware to this year's tally!

Our sincere thanks go to The Royal St. George's Golf Club for their continued support of our Kent Golf events, particularly for their generosity in hosting the final of this prestigious junior competition.

Also, we are very grateful to Kent Golf College for their sponsorship of this year's Race to St. George's and thank them for their interest and involvement.

There will be a couple of changes to next year's competition; entry to the individual qualifiers will no longer be on a first-come-first-served basis but will instead be done on handicap index at closing date, with a ballot if necessary, lower handicaps to have priority. We will also be running a handicap Order of Merit across the four qualifying competitions plus Junior Championship, with vouchers being awarded to the top three at the conclusion of the final qualifier.

Dates for 2025:
7 April at Walmer and Kingsdown
25 May at Prince's
24 July at Lamberhurst
6 August Junior Championships at North Foreland
28 August at Royal Blackheath
Final 23 October at Royal St. George's
